Target achieved for Kenya Airways Safari Classic. PRESSRELEASE
With more than six months to go before the start of the Kenya Airways East African Safari Classic Rally in Mombasa on November 25th, the number of entries has hit the target set by Event Director, Surinder Thatthi. Fifty-four crews have signalled their intention to compete and the last four to be received have been put on a reserve list.
“I am simply delighted with the response from rally drivers all over the world who want to be part of the amazing tradition that is the Safari Rally.” said Surinder Thatthi this morning. “I am especially pleased that the confidence shown in the event by Kenya Airways has helped to attract such a talented and diverse entry. It means that in November we will surely have a truly classic event.”
The entry list contains two ex-World Rally Champions from Sweden - Björn Waldegård and Stig Blomqvist - and has attracted drivers from Australia, Belgium, Austria, South Africa, France, the Netherlands, Germany, Japan, the USA and Britain as well as from Tanzania and Kenya. All the cars have to be models that were built before the end of 1974 so there are plenty of Ford Escorts similar to the one that Hannu Mikkola drove when he became the first European to win the old Safari in 1972 on the twentieth occasion that the rally had been run. Indeed, the Safari Classic, now in its third edition, has so far only been won by East Africa drivers and speculation is high as to whether an overseas driver can stop the run.
